The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890s to the 1920s and was aimed at restoring economic
opportunities and correcting the many unfairness’s in American life. Although many reformers didn’t
agree with one another, the progressive efforts shared at least one of four goals. These goals were to
protect social welfare, promote moral improvement, create economic reform, and to foster efficiency.
Progressives tried to “purify” the government, by eliminating corruption like political machines and
bosses. Women’s suffrage was being promoted and fought for. A major political reformer was the 26 th
president of the United Sates, Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt used many different tactics, such as the
bully pulpit, to change the many wrongs within the government and he has become a model in which all
the future presidents would be judged.
